<p>Keeping teeth clean is essential to good oral health. In order to maximize the effectiveness of the cleaning, a new toothbrush should be used every three months. This is because bacteria from both the teeth and the environment, can easily build up on the toothbrush bristles. If the brush is used too aggressively, there may be a possibility of bacteria being transferred from the brush into the gum tissue. When this happens, there is a risk of developing gum disease such as gingivitis. Once gum disease has started, it needs to be carefully monitored by a qualified dentist in order to stop its progression.</p><p>There are many types of a toothbrush on the market. Brushes come in varying degrees of firmness, ranging from soft to firm bristles. People with sensitive teeth and gums are better off using a brush with soft bristles to avoid irritating the tissue. Generally speaking, teeth should be brushed at least twice a day, in the morning and evening. Some dentists recommend brushing after every meal, but this has recently been cast into doubt when it was discovered that acids from foods could actually damage teeth if they are brushed soon after eating. To avoid tooth damage, it is best to brush 20 minutes after eating to allow the acids to neutralize.</p><p>Another important component of keeping the teeth in top shape is to floss on a daily basis. Flossing gets the food particles that cannot be reached by brushing alone. When food is trapped between teeth and the gum line, there is an increased chance of acquiring gingivitis. This is because the food particles trapped in the gum line contain bacteria that can attack both teeth and gums. Bacteria pockets can build up as a result and may erode tooth enamel. Regularly flossing and getting a professional cleaning helps prevent this from happening.</p><p>Flossing teeth is an easy process and can be quickly accomplished. It only takes a few minutes and should be done after brushing the teeth to thoroughly remove all remaining tooth particles. There are several brands and types of floss on the market and it may require a degree of experimentation to discover the best brand. Some people have teeth that are very close together and they therefore find it almost impossible to get thick or un-waxed floss between their teeth.
