The Benefits of Invisalign Braces
By Matthew Herrera
Invisalign is an effective, comfortable and hygienic alternative to conventional metal braces. Treatment may cost a bit more, but the benefits and speed with which results are obtained more than justify the cost. Crooked teeth cause more than just cosmetic issues; below, we will list some benefits of Invisalign braces.
Problems Resulting from Crooked Teeth
No one is born with a perfect smile, but most people's problems aren't serious. Many people have misaligned teeth; overbites are quite common, and underbite is a little rarer. In some cases, an additional set of teeth begin to coem through, pushing the existing teeth into odd positions. Tooth misalignment can also be caused by injury or bruxism (teeth grinding)--there are many reasons why a person's teeth can become misaligned.
Every patient is different, and so are their results with Invisalign braces. There will always be some degree of discomfort, as people with crooked teeth have a tendency to bite the insides of their mouth while eating. This can be very painful, and the injured area may swell, increasing the chance of a repeat injury.
One of the rarer but very serious issues arising from tooth misalignment is TMJ (temporomandibular jaw) pain. The discomfort of TMJ impacts not only the jaw, but the neck and shoulders; it can cause headaches ranging from mild to severe and debilitating.
How is Invisalign Better than Metal Braces?
You might not have noticed, but very few people wear conventional braces these days. With this type of tooth alignment, the treatment is almost as serious as the condition itself. Metal braces can be very uncomfortable, and they severely limit what a patient can eat. They also require frequent adjustment, which is itself a
moderately painful process. Moreover, treatment can be years-long.
Metal braces also make oral hygiene very difficult; it can be hard to floss between teeth where hardware is present. The Invisalign method of orthodontic correction has all but rendered metal braces obsolete--they don't require twice monthly adjustments, they can be removed for eating, brushing, flossing and cleaning, and most patients see results in a year or less. Below are some additional benefits:
- Invisalign tooth aligners are made of plastic, which is less irritating to the mouth than the hard metal wires of conventional braces.
- They are almost undetectable once they're in the mouth.
- Aligners make it easier to practice good oral and dental hygiene.
- Invisalign can improve gum health; swollen gums can result from misaligned teeth.
- Unlike conventional braces, Invisalign aligners aren't thick enough to impede clear speech. With metal braces, there's an adjustment period while the patient gets used to talking around the hardware; there's no such adjustment period with Invisalign.
There are tremendous benefits to the use of Invisalign tooth aligners, but people and teeth are all unique; they aren't for everyone. To learn more, make an appointment with a dentist or orthodontist, who will be able to determine your candidacy for this type of corrective treatment.
