Nothing can be isolating for a child more than bad breath resulting from poor oral hygiene practices. People are not usually aware they have bad breath, and because it is not something that people feel free to talk about, even peers will prefer to stay away from a sufferer than jeopardize their relationship, telling such a person that they know they have such a problem. When people are conscious that their breath could smell, they become aware of how close they stand to people while they speak. This can be very stressful for anyone, and can be avoided by teaching children good oral hygiene practices early enough.
These include brushing teeth, cutting down on sweets that they take, and also visiting their dentist regularly. Good healthy teeth are essential for comfortable speech, nice cosmetic appearance and healthy feeding. A lot of people assume that all bright white teeth are good and healthy. That may not always be so, and only visits to the dentist will ascertain who has good teeth and who does not have.
Dental visits are no longer for children what they used to be for their parents and grand parents, and the dentists are generally pleasant professionals who try their best to make their surgery as best relaxing as it can be for everybody, but mostly for children.
Most children start shedding their milk teeth as from the age of six, and will continue adding new teeth until twelve to fourteen years later. There tend to be more problem at this time referred to as period of "mixed dentition", so good oral hygiene practices ought to have begun long before this period.
Apart from not practicing good oral hygiene, eating a lot of sweets, chocolates and other confections provide a good environment for bacteria in the mouth which form holes in the teeth known as tooth decay or Dental caries. At most times these teeth may be left unattended to and such holes constitute receptacles for food debris which rot and become another source of bad breath. Rightly these holes are supposed to be treated with dental fillings by the Dentist in his clinic to save the loss of such teeth while also saving such child from bad breath or halitosis. It is important to note that people who get their teeth filled are supposed to visit their dentist regularly for life, just like every other person, even more so. Considering the untoward effect of bad breath, parent will do well to ensure that their children and wards clean their teeth twice a day, minimize their intake of sweets, and make the all-important visit to the dentist for the long term well being of their kids.
