  1. Do not bite or chew ice.Ice can seriously damage your teeth and gums. Fracture lines, chips and cracks are common results of frequent ice chewing.   7. Lessen the impact of teeth grinding.Teeth grinding can lead to a variety of dental problems, including chipping, cracking, fracturing, loosening and excessive wear of the teeth. It can also cause pain in the jaw joints, headaches and severe toothaches. This habit often occurs at night during sleep, usually in response to emotional stress. To limit the damage teeth grinding can cause, your dentist may suggest wearing a mouth guard at night.

  8. Watch out for white wine.Some people choose white wine over red wine as the latter can stain the teeth. But white wine can actually cause more permanent problems because of its high acidity. This acid wears away the tooth enamel, which exposes the darker layer underneath (the dentin), giving teeth a yellowed appearance and leaving them much more vulnerable to stains from any colored food or drinks. For protection, rinse your mouth with water after you drink white wine, and eat some cheese with your wine to balance out the wine's acidity.

  9. Avoid excessive soft drink consumption.Sugary drinks, such as sweetened carbonated sport drinks and soft drinks, are one of the most significant dietary sources of tooth decay. It's not just the sugar in soft drinks that is bad for your teeth. The acids included in the drink also contribute to the formation of cavities. Sugar-free drinks are less harmful, but they can still cause problems, as most of them are also acidic.

  10. Do not suck your thumb.Thumb-sucking, one of the most common children's habits, interferes with the positioning of the upper and lower front teeth, causing the upper teeth to splay out and the lower teeth to fold back into the mouth. These changes in the bite position eventually require orthodontic treatment.

1. Complete Chart Documentation:
The need for complete documentation is critical. With digital records, a template is nice for completeness, but don't neglect the narrative. The staff can and should make chart entries; this increases efficiency and communication effectiveness. A thought for dentists: Don't touch the up button. What happens when you do? The patient jumps up, ready to leave the room.
Instead, doctors, verbally pass control of the patient to the assistant by saying: "Sam, you've done well today and everything went great! I'm going to put you into Sara's very capable hands. She'll finish the chart and talk with you about today's procedure and answer any questions you might have. I'll see you next time." Then the doctor gracefully exits the operatory. Sara says, "Just relax for a minute, Sam. I'm finishing your chart notes and I'll be right with you." The chart should be 90-95% complete before the patient leaves. If the chart isn't finished, the staff person needs to make a note to complete before lunch or before the end of the day.
The doctor should review and initial the record. If there's a staff error, do NOT correct the error, doctor. Also, front office staff should never correct errors. The person in question needs to correct their errors. If repeated errors occur, I'd recommend the doctor have a review privately with the staff member. Continued errors: Consider a formal sit down, corrective review.
One of the greatest frustrations of the front staff is having a patient in front of them, and they can't check the patient out.
2. Incomplete or Delayed Chart entries:
All chart entries need to be completed that day. There's no way you can remember more than a morning or an afternoon.
All entries should be noted in chronological fashion. The entries need to be timely, legible, and outlines all of the dental treatment. There should be no gaps in the entries. If you still work with paper charts, do not leave empty lines. Cross them through (once) and initial the cross out.
Your chart entries should detail all care, communication, prescriptions, missed appointments, re-care attempts, instructions and refusals. Financial arrangements should also be documented. One of the chief triggers of claims or state licensing complaints follow pursuit of a past due account.

A "silver" filling, or dental amalgam, is not a true alloy. Amalgams are made up of 50% or more mercury. The amalgam also consists of approximately 35% silver, 9% tin, 6% copper and a trace of zinc. More than 100 million mercury fillings are placed each year in the U.S. alone and here in Australia over 90% of dentists still use them for restoring posterior teeth.

Mercury is a highly toxic heavy metal and is considered as dangerous as lead and arsenic yet the dental profession is trained that it is perfectly safe once it is mixed in with the other metals. However, mercury evaporates as a vapour every time you chew, grind, and swallow, brush your teeth or the fillings get warm. The average person swallows around 3000 times a day, swallowing brings your teeth into contact causing friction on any existing amalgam fillings.

People with amalgam fillings exceed all the occupational exposure limits for mercury allowances set in all European and North American countries. Adults with four or more amalgams run a significant health risk from the mercury, while in children as few as two amalgams will contribute to health problems.

A single dental amalgam filling with a surface area of only 0.4 sq.cm, that's 2mm by 2mm, is estimated to release as much as 15 micrograms of mercury per day primarily through mechanical wear and evaporation. With the average individual having eight amalgam fillings the absorption goes up to 120 micrograms of mercury per day. Compare this to estimates of the daily absorption of all forms of mercury from fish and seafood which is 2.3 micrograms and from all other foods, air and water which is 0.3 micrograms per day. Therefore we are exposed environmentally to a lot less to mercury from food etc. than we are from our amalgam fillings.

What Happens to the Mercury Vapour from Amalgam?

The vapour serves as the primary route of mercury from amalgams to transfer into the body and into the tissues where it accumulates over time presenting a potential health threat.

Animal studies show that radioactively labelled mercury released from ideally placed amalgam fillings appears quickly in the kidneys, brain, thyroid and wall of the intestines.

Any metal tooth restoration placed in the mouth will also produce electro galvanic effects. When dissimilar metals are placed in the oral cavity they exert a battery-like effect because of the electro conductivity of the saliva. The electrical current causes metal ions to go into solution at a much higher rate, thereby increasing the exposure to mercury vapour and mercury ions manyfold. Gold placed in the vicinity of an amalgam restoration produces a 10-fold increase in the release of mercury.

So What Does Mercury Do?

Mercury attaches to cells and their receptor sites thus blocking the biochemical process of the body by interfering with the way messages are sent from one cell to another via minerals and enzymes. Mercury not only competes with essential minerals it also depletes the body of them. These actions then impact on the functionality of the body impairing the immune system, nervous system, hormone production, kidney function, the cardiovascular system, energy production and so on.

That means it takes 15 to 30 years for half the mercury to be released from the CNS and another 15 to 30 years for half of the remaining half and so on.

Systemic Mercury Elimination

The urine and faeces are the main excretory pathways of metallic and inorganic mercury in humans. These simple tips will help you help your child look after their new teeth and smile for life.

1 Help them brush. Children need assistance brushing their teeth until they are at least 9 or 10 as they do not have the manual dexterity, motivation and skill to care for their teeth effectively alone. I suggest helping them with the nighttime brushing and also encourage flossing from as early an age as possible.

2 Watch out Molar Alert. From as young as 5 the adult molar teeth start coming through in each far back corner. It is normal for them to come through slightly turned, twisted or crowded; these are grown up teeth in child's mouth and there needs to be some growth before they fit in. What happens on one side should happen on the other side at similar times so if they have a new tooth on the left and the one and the right has not made an appearance within a few months that could indicate something is not quiet right.
